Trinitrotoluene is a yellow odorless solid that occurs in the form of crystalline needles. It may be used alone or in combination with other explosive chemicals. Although it is not as powerful as some other explosives, it has the advantage of being relatively insensitive to shock. TNT was discovered by the German chemist Joseph Wilbrand in 1863. For at least 30 years the compound was not known as an explosive. The most common use is in the manufacture of explosives. Trinitrotoluene is a synthetic product that does not naturally occur in the government.
